DJ Requirements
At Sound Fusion, we embrace diversity of dancers, dance styles and music genres.
On any given night, we have dancers from different scenes in both partner and solo dance. We are excited to hire DJs who are able to play songs with a variety of tempos, genres, dynamics, and songs that are accessible to multiple dance styles.
DJ Requirements
-
Be set up and ready to go 15 minutes before your set. If you are late, you may be replaced or not asked back.
-
Be prepared! Have a working device with music and a back up. Bring a power cord for your device, computer to 1/4 inch for mixer, and a headset.
-
All music must be high quality recordings (256 kbps or above) and downloaded to your device. Do not use wi-fi to play music (ex. YouTube or Spotify)
-
Always make sure the volume is down on your channel before you plug or unplug your computer. It will cost you $5 if you pop the speakers. Thank you Mission Fusion for this lovely idea.
-
Once your set starts, do a sound check immediately. Walk around the room to each speaker and to the middle of the room. Listen for sound quality, volume, and if levels need to be adjusted.
-
Read the room. This means actually being in the DJ booth, watching dancers, and adjusting your set accordingly. Dancing to you set can be one way to read the room. However, If you are dancing every song, this is not possible.
-
No drinks on the DJ booth, because electronics.
-
Vary the set with tempos, genres, textures, and dynamics of songs. If there is a lesson, know what is being taught and include a few songsrelated to the lesson. For example play a few alt-Tango songs if there was a Tango class, or Waltz timing if it was a Waltz class. This will give the students an opportunity to practice what they have learned. And you will look like a rockstar DJ who did their homework!
-
Look at the previous DJ's set list, if possible, as to not repeat songs.
-
Be professional when receiving feedback from dancers and organizers. Organizers want to set you, and the dance, up for success. They may step in to give you feedback during your set.
-
If something goes wrong, and you are unable to fix it, ask one of the organizers or other DJ for help ASAP. They can help you trouble shoot.
